My series of female figures, which you can see in the Gallery, began with this work, All of That Is Washed Away. It incorporates pulleys, embroidery thread, screwdrivers, plumbing parts, a medical illustration, river rocks and wire. The background is wood panel painted with acrylics.

Artist Statement

Much of my artwork explores the relationships between our physical bodies and our inner experiences — our emotions, accumulated memories, and spiritual and psychic selves.

Right now I'm creating a series of life-size figurative sculptures, constructing women's forms using metal wire, loosely drawing and connecting their curves in space, then assembling found objects inside the forms to depict a specific story from each figure's life. My intent is to invite viewers to look through the figure's outer shell to see what lies inside. Wood panels painted with acrylics provide a subtle backdrop for each work, the suggestion of an environment in which the figure's story unfolds.

Short Bio

I was born near Chicago and have lived in Seattle since 1995. I earned a B.A. in art history and studied drawing, design and sculpture at Smith College.

My current project is influenced in part by my study of human anatomy and the interconnectedness of body, mind, emotion and memory during my training and practice as a massage therapist. My artwork also responds to the tension between that which can be scientifically known, measured and visualized about the human body and that which cannot be fully captured by current technology, an interest arising from my work as a medical writer.

Purpose

"Art is food. You can't eat it, but it feeds you. Art has to be cheap & available to everyone. It needs to be everywhere because it is the inside of the world."

Well-wishers have tried telling me for years, in one way or another, to make more time and space in my life to make art — primarily because they could see, sometimes more clearly than I could, how much art-making feeds me. This site is for them, so they can keep up with what I'm doing. And it's for anyone else who's curious about making art or making art more a part of your life or about my work in particular.

One More Thing

About the Bread & Puppet quote above: A driving philosophy behind my creative process is that art doesn't have to cost a lot to make. It can, and that's fine. But art — art that's beautiful, meaningful, expressive, thought provoking — can be made with simple, inexpensive materials. The wire I sculpt with costs about $4 per spool at a nearby hardware store. Many of the found objects I use, if I haven't picked them up off the street, come from Goodwill or garage sales or are given to me by friends. Make art with whatever you have.
